Abbotsford International Airshow – Time Capsule

On August 7, 1970, a Time Capsule was placed in a stone cairn at the Abbotsford International Airport, to be opened 50 years later. The time capsule was in honour of the Abbotsford International Airshow being named as “Canada’s 1st National Airshow” and was sealed in 1970 by former Prime Minister, Pierre E. Trudeau. On August 7, 2020 the Time Capsule was opened.

The Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan, and several other local politicians, were on hand for the ceremony, and were joined by George Aung-Thin, President Abbotsford Flying Club. The Club was instrumental in starting the first airshow in 1962. Millie Watson was recognized by Minister Sajjan for her continuing support for the airshow from the very beginning; Millie was at the first airshow in 1962 selling programs!

Before the cairn is resealed, a new time capsule will be placed along side the original, to be opened 50 years hence.

It was my honour to be invited by Steve Stewart, Chairman of the Abbotsford International Airshow Society, to photograph the ceremony.
